Although there are different types of composting methods available today, pipe compost is one of the most inexpensive and easily manage solution that all of us can manage at home with a limited space. The compost unit consist of a compost pipe and a lid to keep it covered. All type of biodegradable food waste can be turned into useful manure using this compost pipe the compost pipe should be kept vertically and about one foot under the ground. A family of two will require two units of compost pipe and a family of 4 will require three units of compost pipe. A completely filled compost pipe will take about two to three months of resting time to convert food waste into dried manure

Dos and Don’ts

Dos:

Cooked and uncooked food waste.

Fish and meat waste.

Don’ts:

Do not add lemon peels, eggshells, or any type of sour food items.

Do not add plastic waste, broken glass or any non-degradable item.

Do not add waste in liquid form such as tea and rice soup

(strain the water content from the food waste before putting it into the compost pipe).

Do not place compost pipes in areas prone to water clogging.

The process of composting is carried out by microorganisms that break down organic waste. Thus, within months, these residues are converted by microorganisms into excellent organic manure through an aerobic process. If for any reason, there is a delay in turning these residues into compost, a little cow dung can be added to the compost pipe to stimulate the composting process.
